Toronto’s Neighbouring Cities


a Hello and welcome to the ninth article in the series "Postcards from Toronto". These articles are written to help you learn about life in and around Toronto and teach you some useful vocabulary and expressions for improving your spoken and written English skills.

Toronto is a great city, with many things to see and do (1) __________. However, sometimes it is nice to get away from the city and visit other places, either for a day, a weekend, or perhaps even a (2) __________. This article will describe some of the towns and cities close to Toronto and their attractions. All of these cities are easiyly reached by public transport: either railway or Greyhound bus.


aTwo of the most obvious and popular places to visit, especially in summer and fall, are Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls. The (3) __________ is a small town with many traditional wooden houses near the place where the Niagara River joins Lake Ontario. The town is famous for beautiful houses and lovely streets with many gift shops and nice restaurants. There are also some (4) __________ you can visit, including Fort George, plus a famous drama festival, the Shaw Festival, that runs every year from April until November. Niagara Falls, on the other hand, is famous not for the town or the historical sites but for one of Canada’s most popular tourist attractions: the famous Niagara Falls. Many people also visit for the casinos.

aAnother interesting place to visit outside Toronto is Hamilton, which is about 70 kilometres southwest of Toronto. Hamilton is famous, or infamous, as a steel-producing city, so it has a (5) __________ as an industrial city. However, in addition to the industries located there, Hamilton has some enjoyable attractions. One of these is Dundurn Castle which is (6) __________ not a castle at all! It is a very large house that used to be owned by one of the most powerful families in Canada, one of whom was the prime minister of Canada in the nineteenth century. (7) __________, many tourists to Hamilton enjoy (8)?__________ the Royal Botanical Gardens, a huge park on the north side of Hamilton’s harbour, which has beautiful forests, marshes and lakes.

Other (9) __________ cities that you might like to visit are Windsor, London, Kitchener, Waterloo, Stratford or even two American cities: Buffalo or Detroit. All of these cities have interesting museums, historical sites, shops and other attractions. Toronto is a wonderful place to visit and live, but I recommend that you try to visit one or two of Toronto’s neighbours, to get a better (10) __________ of Canada and Canadian culture.
