The Toronto Islands
Hello and welcome to the fifth article in the series ‘Postcards from Toronto '. These articles are written to help you learn about life in Toronto and teach you some useful expressions for spoken and written English.
In my opinion, one of the best things about living in Toronto is the wonderful variety of neighbourhoods to explore, places to visit, and things to do. Toronto has beautiful sandy beaches along the shore of Lake Ontario , (1) ____________ parks and ravines (a type of valley) in the heart of the city, exciting shopping malls, world-class museums and many other (2) ____________. From among the many choices, one of my favorite places to visit, especially on beautiful spring days or humid summer weekends, is "The Toronto Islands".
Toronto 's islands were originally not islands at all. Until 150 years ago, the ‘islands' were actually (3) ____________ to the shore by a sandy peninsula (a long piece of land that is almost surrounded by water). The peninsula was a popular place among Native Canadians because it was beautiful, (4) ____________ and relaxing. Europeans also enjoyed visiting the area. In 1858 a large storm damaged the peninsula so much that it washed away into the lake and created the Toronto Islands .
These days there are three main islands and (5) ____________ smaller islands. The three largest islands are Ward's Island in the east; Centre Island in the middle (of course!); and Hanlan's Point to the west. The busiest of these is Centre Island , which has a small theme park (6) ____________ "Centreville Amusement Park" .
The only way to get to the islands is by ferry, unless you want to swim which is definitely not recommended. "The ferry" to the islands leaves from the ferry (7) ____________ which is located at the southern tip of the city. To get there you can take the subway to Union Station and then take either the 509 or 510 streetcar to the Bay and Queen's Quay stop. The entrance to the ferry dock is on the south side of the street, a little bit east of the Westin Harbor Castle hotel. The (8) ____________ takes about 10 or 15 minutes and costs $6 for adults.
After you arrive on the islands there are many things you can do. For example, you can take a walk on the boardwalk and enjoy some beautiful views of downtown Toronto . Alternatively, you can play tennis, rent a bicycle from Centre Island and cycle around, enjoy the rides at the Centreville Amusement Park or just relax and have a (9) ____________ picnic. In fact, it might be a good idea to take some picnic food with you, whatever you (10) ____________ to do. There are some restaurants on the island, but they are generally pretty expensive or not so delicious. You should also take some bottles of water and, of course, a camera.
