Toronto Walking Tours

aHello and welcome to the eleventh article in the series "Postcards from Toronto". These articles are written to help you learn about life in and around Toronto and teach you some useful vocabulary and expressions for improving your spoken and written English skills.

Canada is a country that seems (1) ____________ automobiles. Many people have cars, especially large cars such as SUVs, and every day there are articles in the newspaper or on the television news about the newest cars or increasing gas prices. However, although Toronto is a large city, for most people who live here it is possible to get (2) ____________ the city easily and conveniently without using a car. The public transportation system is pretty good (most of the time!) and not too expensive, and because Toronto has so many different neighbourhoods, often it is possible to walk to the places that you need to visit.

This article will describe some possibilities for walking tours that you may want to join. There are many types of walking tours available in Toronto. Some of them are guided tours; others are (3) ____________. Some of them are free; others must be paid for, although the price is usually quite (4) ____________. These walking tours are an interesting (and healthy!) way to see the city, learn about Toronto's rich and exciting history and also meet some interesting people with whom you can practice your English speaking and listening skills, especially if you take a guided tour. Some tours are only available in the summer, but there are plenty of (5) ____________ for the fall and winter, too.

aSome of the most popular types of tours are (6) ____________ tours that focus on different places of interest depending on the time of year. For example, in October there are many tours with a Halloween theme, especially tours that focus on ghosts and famous haunted buildings in Toronto. In December, on the other hand, there are many tours with a Christmas (7) ____________ that focus on "the annual Santa Claus parade" , for example. The best website for finding information about available tours is the "Toronto ? You belong here" site. This page has a list of all the different tours and tour companies in Toronto, including information about those tours which are free.

aOther tours that are popular are themed tours, such as a tour of the best places to drink beer in Toronto, or a tour of (8) ____________ buildings, or a tour of some great places to buy food. My personal favourite tours are those that give people an opportunity to explore some of Toronto's many parks and natural areas. Surprisingly, for such a large city, Toronto has many areas of natural beauty that are almost like the countryside. Taking a tour of some of these beautiful areas with a knowledgeable guide is definitely an interesting experience and, as the weather will soon be turning cold, something you should try to organize soon before the winter weather arrives.
